Depression in women is a major health problem. Many
women suffer from various forms of depression, but many forms of depression
though common are also curable.
Women suffering from depression have various complaints. Some of which
are a feeling of hopelessness, fatigue, inadequate concentration, and
disruption in routine activities to extreme forms like a tendency to commit
suicide. Depression can also lead to various physical, mental and social
disorders that may also lead to substance abuse or other disorders.
There are many causes of depression and they can be broadly classified
under three categories. These are biological, social and medical. Biological
causes such as lack of nutrients like carbohydrates, minerals, poor nutrition
or even lack of exercise is known to cause depression among many women.
Inability to handle stress or anxiety, sense of failure to fulfill responsibilities,
roles and expectations, abuse of any kind, stress during pregnancy and
post pregnancy are some of the social causes of depression among women.
Women suffering from various kinds of abuse tend to have very low self
esteem and lack the self-confidence to handle stress, which leads to depression.
Genetics, diabetes, thyroid problems and hormonal disturbances like menopause
are the major medical causes of depression in women.
Depression in women is a source of great concern to people all over the
world. Research has proved that through comprehensive examination and
studies on all aspects of like social, medical and biological history
of the patient it is now easier to treat depression in women.
