Signs and Symptoms of pregnancy are unique to every woman. Signs and symptoms of pregnancy applicable to one woman may not be applicable to another. There are some symptoms of pregnancy that are visible during the initial stages and some that are visible in the later stages.

Though all the initial symptoms in the initial stages of pregnancy can be related to other clinical causes, which the patient must rule out by seeing a physician. The basic and most early indication of pregnancy is a missed period. Other early signs are scanty periods, sleepiness, a feeling of tiredness, morning sickness or nausea. General enlargement of breasts, a heightened sense of smell are also some signs of pregnancy experienced by women. Women also experience changes in their appetite, they may develop a sudden aversion to certain types of food or a sudden liking for others. In the initial stages of pregnancy some women tend to lose a little weight but make up for it by gaining adequate weight in the latter stages. Lower back pain and mood swings are some other symptoms of pregnancy though they could be attributed to other causes.

In the latter stages a straight vertical line called the Linea nigra is visible along the enlarged abdomen of pregnant women. Along with an increase in weight , the mother to be experiences the fetal movements of the baby. Other signs and symptoms of pregnancy experienced in the advanced stage are an increase in the frequency of urination, heartburn, flatulence, development of striae or stretch marks along the thighs, arms, breasts, abdomen and hips.

Apart from these signs and symptoms of pregnancy experienced by pregnant women there are other biological and clinical methods used by gynecologists to detect pregnancies. These include laboratory tests ultra sounds, fetal heartbeats, status and physical position of the baby and other internal organs, which confirm a pregnancy.
