Teen relationship abuse is more common than is widely
believed and accepted. Teenage abuse is rampant in both developed and
underdeveloped countries. Teenagers who are abused suffer from a lot of
stress; strain and low self esteem which has a great impact on their social
behavior and development.
Teenagers are very vulnerable to abuse since they cannot or are unable
to voice their sufferings. The reason for this being that adolescence
is an age where the teenagers are still in the process of discovering
and understanding relationships. During this stage they are still coming
to terms with the changes in their physical appearance and they are also
unsure of their emotions and have less control over their feelings. These
developments lead to inability to decide whether their relationships are
on the right track or not.
In cases where the teenager knows the person responsible for abuse it
is difficult for teenagers to speak out. The abuser could be a family
member; neighbor or cousin and thus the teenager may be reluctant to speak
out against them for fear of threats, more abuse or the fact that they
will not be believed. This is another important factor responsible for
teenagers to suffer silently in an abusive relationship.
Adolescence is part of the formative years in an individual’s life.
Teen relationship abuse at this stage can have a long lasting effect on
the overall well being of an individual. It could lead to various physical,
mental or psychological disorders later in life. Experts suggest that
people who have been abused as young children or teenagers may suffer
from similar abusive personalities or have behavioral problems.
It is therefore very important that teenagers who have been subjected
to any kind of abuse be treated with a lot of love, understanding care
and trust.
