Childcare : Dealing with a toddler sleep problem

Toddler sleep problem is an issue faced by all parents. One of the most common sleep problem faced by a parent is that of the child not sleeping on time. Other problems are the child waking up at night, sleepwalking, sleep talking, or bedwetting. Some children need more sleep and some need less sleep. Parents should ensure that the naps taken by the toddlers do not interfere with their night sleep.

Toddlers associate different emotions with different activities. Over stimulation just before bedtime may overexcite some children and therefore interfere in their sleep. A bedtime story could result in nightmares or bedwetting. Toddlers are likely to experience many different emotions by interacting with their external environment. These emotions could vary from excitement to fear.

Toddler sleep problems could also be due to the fact that the children overtire themselves too easily and get irritable and fussy at bedtime. As a result of which they may get too excited to sleep or they may get scared of being left alone and then begin to relate bedtime as a time of separation from their parents.

Most experts agree that toddler sleep problems can be eliminated if the parents make a conscious effort to establish a regular bedtime routine and follow it.

Toddler sleep problems may also be due to hereditary or emotional disturbances. These may require professional treatment. After ruling out any physical reasons for bedtime problems, the most obvious answer to most toddler sleep problems is to ensure and follow a proper sleeping ritual.
