The gain in weight during pregnancy follows a certain pattern which can be termed as typical pregnancy weight gain. Since a growing baby gets all its nutrients from the mother it is extremely important that mothers to be eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet. All women need to gain weight during pregnancy to fulfill the growing demands of motherhood and the needs of the growing baby.

Research has shown that though the amount of weight gained by each woman is different, there is a certain pattern in which all women generally gain weight. The gain in weight during pregnancy does not occur all at once in fact, it is gradual and spread through the entire duration of the pregnancy.

In most pregnant women the initial weeks may result in a slight weight loss. After that they start to gain weight, about one to one and a half pounds a month. In the second trimester of the pregnancy the gain in weight is about half a pound or more per week. By the last trimester the increase in weight is approximately one pound a week. The amount of gain in weight varies from woman to woman and some women may gain more or some may gain less weight. This is the general pattern of weight gain in most pregnancies.

Though the exact amount gain in weight is different for every woman, a doctor can easily suggest the appropriate amount of weight to be gained by a woman during her pregnancy. Research has shown that in a typical pregnancy weight gain is about twenty to thirty pounds.
