Pregnancy : Typical Pregnancy Weight Gain |
 |
The gain in weight during pregnancy follows a certain
pattern which can be termed as typical pregnancy weight gain. Since a
growing baby gets all its nutrients from the mother it is extremely important
that mothers to be eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet. All women
need to gain weight during pregnancy to fulfill the growing demands of
motherhood and the needs of the growing baby.
Research has shown that though the amount of weight gained by each woman
is different, there is a certain pattern in which all women generally
gain weight. The gain in weight during pregnancy does not occur all at
once in fact, it is gradual and spread through the entire duration of
the pregnancy.
In most pregnant women the initial weeks may result in a slight weight
loss. After that they start to gain weight, about one to one and a half
pounds a month. In the second trimester of the pregnancy the gain in weight
is about half a pound or more per week. By the last trimester the increase
in weight is approximately one pound a week. The amount of gain in weight
varies from woman to woman and some women may gain more or some may gain
less weight. This is the general pattern of weight gain in most pregnancies.
Though the exact amount gain in weight is different for every woman, a
doctor can easily suggest the appropriate amount of weight to be gained
by a woman during her pregnancy. Research has shown that in a typical
pregnancy weight gain is about twenty to thirty pounds.
